About me
Meet David Youngs
Hello! I’m David Youngs, a licensed professional psychotherapist in the state of Colorado. I have been a therapist for 15 years and am very passionate about therapy. It is my pleasure to help you live a healthier and happier life!
This year (2025) I have turned 50. My wife Jen, our dog Louisa and I have moved to the western part of Colorado and have moved into a quaint town (Paonia). I have been a therapist in community mental health for 15 years and I am excited to start my own practice at this time in my life.
I believe that we are all still growing and ideally moving towards greater health. It is my passion to help you move from surviving to thriving in your life.

How do you do therapy? What should I expect if I’m working with you?
Therapy for you will be personal and specific based on your goals and needs. I recommend scheduling a free 30 minute consultation so that we can discuss your basic goals as well as get a sense of each other. The number one indicator of successful therapy is a good fit between therapist and client.
Having written that, I can give you a general idea of how therapy often works with my clients. There are patterns in your life. If you are considering your life, you are likely noticing some consistent patterns that are causing you problems. Perhaps it is a pattern of depression, anxiety or irritability that is hurting your quality of life. Perhaps it is a pattern of problems in your relationships. These patterns aren’t happening by accident. And, you didn’t wake up and say to yourself “I think I will choose to experience these same patterns today”. Via therapy, we can observe these patterns and gain insight into why they are happening. If you can see the patterns, you can change them! It is not always easy work but it is doable. And, the results are greater happiness and health.
My “modality” or professional orientation is eclectic (like many therapists). I use psychodynamic therapy, motivational interviewing, person centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I typically focus on depth therapy (psychodynamic therapy) as much as possible to try to get to the root of problems, assist you to gain insight and then assist you to make changes as needed.
Currently I do “telehealth” only. So, this wouldn’t be therapy in person. Telehealth software is used through an internet connection and can be used via your smartphone, laptop or desktop computer. You don’t have to download or pay for anything extra. So far my clients have found using the software easy to use. (The software is like using Zoom).
Do you charge on a sliding scale? What are the costs? Do you take insurance?
Though I officially charge $150.00 a session, I am certainly willing to charge on a sliding scale to meet your needs. A typical sliding scale rate is double your hourly pay or the first two or three digits of your salary. For example, if you make $20.00 an hour, I will likely charge you $40.00 per session. Or if you made $75,000.00 a year in salary, I will likely charge you $75.00 per session. This would be negotiated between us. If you are not employed, as some of my clients currently are, you would likely pay less. In rare instances I do therapy for free though unfortunately I can’t take on too many of these clients due to having to meet my own (and my family’s) financial needs.
I do not currently take insurance though that will likely be changing soon. Please inquire about your insurance as needed.
I want to address my mental health but I don’t know how to do therapy. Do you teach your clients’ to do therapy?
This is an important question. Therapy is still very mysterious in our culture and many people are anxious or irritated about how it all works. I will be glad to coach you through the first sessions, so you have an idea of the flow of therapy. I am very comfortable with feedback from clients, so I am open to your questions, frustrations and anxiety about it all. Typically, people find their rhythm with psychotherapy in a few sessions if the fit between us is good.
Do you specialize? Who are your typical clients?
I’m a general psychotherapist so I do not specialize. I work with adults only and only individual therapy. I have been a therapist for 15 years now and am very passionate about the work! It is very rewarding to assist people to grow and help people thrive. I particularly enjoy working on “mood disorders” (i.e. depression, anxiety, irritability) as well as personality issues and disorders (i.e. narcissism, borderline personality disorder). Relationship issues and existential issues are often common, and I am fascinated and glad to assist clients with these issues too. My goal is to help you be healthier and happier!
